Our Mission

Our mission is to support and sustain our Saint George community ministries by providing opportunities that expand the mind, strengthen the spirit and make a difference in people’s lives through the celebration of the written word.

Our Ministry

In planning 'In Their Own Words', our inaugural luncheon last year, the committee felt that it could reach beyond that one event and foster a greater goal of reading and education at Saint George and perhaps outside of our community as well. We chose the name Philologians which means lovers of the written word.

Why you should support

the Ministries of The Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George

With the support of our members, we have established many ministries which include the following.

Feed the Hungry, which purchases, cooks, packages, and delivers food to local homeless shelters and safe-houses in the greater Washington Metropolitan area on a monthly basis.

The Ladies Philoptochos Society assists the poor monetarily, providing funds to individuals and families to pay bills, receive medical attention, and aid where needed.

Fifty-Plus attends to the needs of senior citizens – particularly those who are sick in hospitals, nursing homes, or are alone.

Our Educational program teaches more than 400 children every week in religion, ethics, and the values that will help them become productive citizens.

Kollecas House, located on the Church property, provides lodging and transportation support for those from overseas who require treatment at the National Institutes of Health.

Pastoral Counseling is offered by our clergy which provides guidance to a growing number of people who are anxious, stressed, or have life issues related to family, job, or personal development.

Our Outreach Ministry offers support to domestic programs such as Habitat for Humanity, as well as many international charities such as the Bediane Orphanage in the Country of Georgia; the St. Innocent Orphanage, Project Mexico; Mother Inez’s Hogar Orphanage in Guatamala; and “Christmas in Palestine” Program, Taybek, Palestine.

In light of the current state of the economy and the growing number of people with needs never before experienced, we want to increase our ability to reach out, provide assistance, and minister to those whom Jesus called “the least of my brethren”. We are grateful for your partnership and compassion.

The Literary Luncheon is a major fundraiser for these and other ministries at St. George. We hope to raise enough money to help us continue to expand these outreach efforts. In that regard, we need your financial support.
